A 28-year-old woman has been charged with  killing five of her own newborn babies over a period of several years, police said Thursday.

Die Welt reports that the woman, whose name cannot be disclosed due to German privacy laws, has confessed to killing two of the babies, five years after their bodies were discovered in northern Germany.

In March 2006, one of the deceased infants was found in the small town of Ahrenshöft, while another body was found wrapped in a plastic bag and left in a parking lot in March 2007.

German authorities say the woman has been charged with five counts of manslaughter.

For the German public, the story has unearthed some uneasy memories: in 2006 a 40-year-old woman was convicted of killing eight of her children near the Polish border, Der Spiegel reports.

The remains of the children, who were born between 1988 and 1998, were found in a shed belonging to the woman's parents, buried in plant pots, an aquarium and a baby-bath.
