Swimming Race Organizer Charged With Murder In Argentina

CLARIN (Argentina)

POSADOS - Two years and seven months after a swimming competition in the Parana River on the border of Argentina and Paraguay turned tragic, the competition organizer and the chief of operations at the local police department are being charged with homicide for failing to recognize the risks from barges anchored in the river, Clarin reports.

This swimming competition, which consisted of crossing the river, from the Paraguayan side to the Argentinian side, resulted in the drowning death of eight swimmers who were sucked under the barges as they swam. The ages of the victims ranged from 12 to 58.

A judge decided that the organizer and local police should have taken into account all of the risks associated with swimming across the river and taken steps to minimize those risks, Clarin reported. The judge ruled that because they did not take minimal safety precautions, both could be charged for homicide.
