ULTIMAS NOTICIAS (Venezuela)
It’s well known that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez can talk – and talk, and talk. Turns out he can also sing. Sort of. During a campaign event this week, the larger-than-life leader worked an all-female crowd of supporters into a frenzy with a few rancheras.
The controversial crooner used the event to pitch would-be female voters, boasting that “no government has treated Venezuelan women with as much respect as this one,” the daily Ultimas Noticias reported.
Chavez, who first rose to prominence as the author of a failed 1992 coup, has governed the South American country since 1999. He has said he would like to stay on as president until 2031. But first he’ll have to beat challenger Henrique Capriles Radonski in Venezuela’s upcoming presidential election, set for October 7.
“We can’t be smug. Nor can we underestimate the adversary,” Chavez told supporters on Wednesday. “This bourgeoisie doesn’t have any limits, it doesn’t have any values.”
“Votes for Chavez aren’t for Chavez, but for the country. For the social happiness of all of you,” he added.
