MADRID - The unemployment rate in Spain has registered a new record: 5.693.100 people- 24.6% of the Spanish active population are jobless, Spanish daily El Pais reports. This is the highest figure since 1994.
El Mundo daily titles: “Summer hasn’t curbed unemployment. One in four Spanish people doesn’t have a job.”?The period between April and June is usually a good one for the employment sector, as the Spanish market is mainly based on tourism and constructions. Despite this, there are today 1.737.600 families in Spain with no family members employed.
Unemployment among young people is also at its highest rate: a whopping 53% of under 25-year-olds are jobless.
According to El Mundo, these figures are the results of the labor reform started in February this year. During the same period of 2011, 151.400 new jobs were created, while this year’s results show that 15.900 jobs were lost.
The sectors in which the highest number of jobs disappeared were agriculture (44.000) and industry (21.000), Catalonian daily La Vanguardia reports.??The highest unemployment rate is registered in the Southern region of Andalusia (33.92%), followed by Extremadura and the Canary Islands. The best faring region is the Basque country with 14.56%.
