TORONTO - A shooting at a barbecue street party in Toronto's residential east end left two dead and 19 injured, in what the Canadian police called "the worst incident of gun violence" the city has ever seen.
A teenage girl and a man believed to be in his early 20s were pronounced dead at the scene, the Toronto Star reports.
An infant was injured in the mass panic that followed the shooting, but is in a stable condition now. Other injuries in the incident included gunshot wounds and fractures from the melee.
Toronto police Chief Bill Blair said one of the 19 injured was a "person of interest" and had been taken into custody, adding that more than one gun was used in the incident that may have been caused by a dispute at the party, CBC News reports.
The tragedy comes just weeks after a shooting at a Toronto shopping mall killed one and wounded six, raising fresh fears of a rise in gun crime in a city that the mayor last month assured was "still the safest city in the world."
